Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
