Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
