Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been a binding element holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
